The snow has arrived and January looks set to be an amazing month to visit Morzine and Les Gets. With incredible events planned for the whole family, there really will be something going on to make your trip to this amazing part of the world extra special.

We’ve been looking at all the calendars, asking the people in the know and coming up with the best things to add something magical to your holiday.

a husky race

Events

The Grand Odyssee is one of the most impressive and exciting events to come to the Portes du Soleil. The husky sledging race which tours parts of The Alps each year is in Les Gets on Monday the 9th January. The race takes place over the space of 11 days and is labelled as one of the most difficult dog sledging races in the world. Les Gets is hosting the second stage of the race which will then moves on to Praz de Lys and the Grand Massif. Taking place in the early evening means the race runs across the snow in the darkness so really is impressive to watch!

If you prefer to be part of the action rather than watch it then why not head to the back of l'Aubergade. The most exciting addition to the fun offering in Morzine this January is the Bertoni Freeski Zone. A giant airbag has been erected on the nursery slope behind the hotel. The Freeski Zone also has rails and boxes aimed at helping you develop your freestyle. It’s 10 euros for an hour in the park. If you don’t fancy flinging yourself onto the airbag on your skis or board then you can also have a go at snow tubing. Jump on an inflatable ring and fly down the slope onto the airbag. It’s 10 euros for half an hour of fun.

Every Thursday afternoon throughout the season you can have a go at curling in the tourist office square in Morzine. However... it’s not the ordinary type of curling, it involves you flinging yourself across the ice! The event on the outdoor ice rink in the centre of town is for the whole family and adds something new and fun to the offering. It’s a little bit tamer than flinging yourself on the giant airbag.

a band

On Saturday 14th January head to La Biskatcha restaurant and bar in Les Gets where an acoustic duo 'Bambiz' will be playing live from 19:00. Melanie and Romain are a guitar and voice duo with an extensive repertoire comprising jazz, pop and folk songs.

A Girls Shred day, hosted by Le Cottage, will be taking place on 18th January from 12:00. This event gives women the chance to ride together in the snow park in Avoriaz and get some informal coaching, try out new tricks and maybe even win some prizes.

For the Kids

Some of the activities above might be a little too much for the little ones however there’s still loads going on in Morzine and Les Gets that’s suitable and fun for children. Both Morzine and Les Gets have outdoor ice rinks and plenty of spots for sledging. Now that the snow has arrived, the weekly torchlit descent is taking place in Morzine every Tuesday evening. Watch as the instructors from the ESF ski school ski down the face of the Pleney holding read torches. It’s a fantastic event to watch and the kids will love it.

Sport

There’s always plenty of sporting action taking place in and around Morzine and Les Gets and January is no exception. In Ice Hockey, the Morzine-Chamonix Pionniers are taking on Epina at the ice rink in Morzine. The game is taking place on the 22nd of January and is always great fun for everyone. It’s loud, rowdy, and a great experience to add to your holiday calendar. However, if you’re not here on the 22nd but still fancy some Ice Hockey action then don’t worry. Most Wednesdays you can find an exhibition game taking place. There are games on the 11th, 18th and 25th of January so everyone can experience the exhilaration of a live game.

The Best Apres

If you’re looking for a bit of a party when you’re in Morzine and Les Gets then there are a couple of events to keep your eyes open for this January. The Cab Collective Showcase is taking place on the 11th January at the Aubergade. It’s being billed as the Aubergade’s first big party of the season and includes live music from the Cab Collective, a special “Cab Punch” and of course lots of tasty food.

The Kinkerne in Les Prodains (below the Prodain bubble) has also restarted its legendary apres evenings. The bar on the slope is a great place to head to if you are waiting for your lift back to Morzine or Les Gets. With live music, drinks deals and plenty of atmosphere it’s a great place for an end of the day drink or two.

Audible 1 and special guests will also be playing at Inferno from 16:30 on 11th January, alongside Candyman and DJ Monkey with some amazing food and drink promotions on offer. Then on 18th & 25th January the Mountain Meal apres party returns to Infero.
