La Coupe Restaurant Review

Newly opened, this place is definitely worth a visit

From Rude Café to the cosy Coupe, our new favourite Morzine restaurant is well worth a visit

We were looking for somewhere nice to take our friends who had just got married for a post wedding, congratulations dinner. We’d heard good things about, La Coupe, the new restaurant, which has replaced Rude Café, so we thought we’d give it a go. I’m really pleased we did.

From the moment we arrived, our waitress and the rest of the staff couldn’t have done more to make us feel welcome. The restaurant has only been open for a few weeks so they were still finding their feet but this wasn’t at all noticeable. They were knowledgeable about the food and the drink and were more than happy to help us make our choices.

The wine was a particular highlight of the evening. Starting at around 13€ for a bottle not only is it reasonably priced but its also extremely tasty. We chose a bottle of red priced at 15€ which the entire table seemed to think was pretty special. At that price, that’s a pretty big thing! We even took photos of the bottle so we can look for it again.

The food menu offers a wide eclectic choice so there’s something for everyone. The starters were a particular highlight of the evening. We chose to share a couple of portions of salt and pepper squid, which started the meal off really well and gave us a lot of confidence in the chef. They were crispy, not chewy and very well seasoned. There’s a risk with squid that it’ll be stringy (or like old knicker elastic as one of our party pointed out) but these were nothing like that!

In terms of main meals, there’s plenty of choice. There are burgers and steaks but also other dishes including Cote de Boeuf, platters and vegetarian options. I opted for the fish of the day, which was Salmon with sweet potato chips and a delicious beetroot jus. It was fantastic and there was plenty of food. I didn’t really need the extra side of sweet potato fries that we ordered, but managed to polish them off anyway.

The other three in our party decided to give the Cote de Boeuf a try. They were sceptical when ordering because it can be a risky choice. However, when they saw their dinner, that initial worry went out of the window pretty quickly. They said it was cooked to perfection and the sides that went with it, which included roasted garlic, artichoke and mushrooms were delicious. They had bowls of potatoes to go with it as well so between us we really did order a feast! Nevertheless, because of how tasty it was, the pile of beef and the mound of potatoes and sweet potatoes went down pretty well.

The problem in a relatively small restaurant is that you see everyone else’s meals come out, which either causes food envy or makes your eyes grow bigger than your stomach. Our decision to not have pudding didn’t last long after we saw a bowl of bread and butter pudding being brought to the table next to us. There was also an amazing looking “Surprise Sundae” floating around. So between us, despite being extremely full, we decided pudding was necessary after all. We chose to share a bread and butter pudding, which was made with croissants. It turned out to be the perfect end to an amazing meal.

The atmosphere and design of the restaurant contribute really well to the comforting and warm style of the menu. Its low lighting, quiet jazzy music and friendly staff make you feel very welcome and cosy. We were treated to a large glass of chartreuse at the end of the meal which helped to ease the fullness a little but seemingly, on top of a couple of bottles of that delicious red, left a few members of the party with a slightly sore head the next morning.

We have already been telling our friends to visit La Coupe because we did have a truly lovely evening there. We spent around 140€ between the 4 of us but chose some of the most expensive dishes on the menu and didn’t scrimp on wine and extras. I’d say for what it is, it’s very reasonably priced. When you have such tasty food, lovely company and yummy wine, there’s nothing to complain about really. We’ll be going back!
