Winter might be known as the busiest season of the year in Morzine and Les Gets but that’s not to say that Summer is completely quiet.

There is still plenty going on to keep people entertained, and there is something on to suit all tastes.

Mountain biking

The Portes Du Soleil, and Les Gets in particular, is world famous as a mountain bike destination, so it is only fitting that some of the biggest events this summer revolve around the sport. The mountain bike season really kicks off with the Pass’portes Du Soleil event at the end of June. This years event, the 16th edition, will run over June 28th, 29th and 30th. The Pass’portes Du Soleil is an internationally renowned mountain bike event that involves riders attempting to cover 8km in one day. It crosses the border between Switzerland and France, and features fifteen different lifts. Every year it attracts scores of mountain bikers looking to break records, or just beat their own personal best.

This year there is another mountain bike event taking place in Les Gets for riders to get excited about. Between July 12th and 14th, the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup is making a long overdue return to Les Gets. The town is sure to fill up as fans flock to watch the best in the world battle it out in downhill and cross country disciplines. This is just the start of Les Gets’ UCI resurgence, with more world cups planned for the next couple of years and the UCI World Championships scheduled for 2022. This is definitely one not to be missed.

It’s not all mountain biking, however. Morzine and Les Gets are also excellent road biking destinations, and the Criterium Du Dauphine race will be passing by in June. The Criterium is a road race taking place between June 9th and 16th. Every year it attracts some of the best road cyclists in the world, and offers fans a chance to see some of the riders who will be competing in the Tour De France later in the summer. This year, Stage 8 of the race on the June 16th will begin in Cluses before crossing over the border into Switzerland and finishing in Champery. The route will pass by Les Gets before heading over to La Chapelle D’Abondance and through Morgins before finishing in Champery.

If bikes are not your thing, then maybe the Spartan Race could be. Taking place on the weekend of July 6th, the Spartan is a number of races of various difficulties featuring different numbers of obstacles. There are still places available for anyone wishing to enter, but for those not wishing to race there are plenty of places around town to watch the race unfold throughout the weekend.

After a year away, Harley Days is once again returning to Morzine. Taking place between July 11th and 14th, this event is organised by the Harley Davidson Owners Club of France, and is a weekend full of activities for all the family. There will be bike displays and music throughout the weekend, as well as fireworks and market stalls all along the Rue Du Bourg. The centrepiece of the weekend is the live music taking place in the main square of Morzine. This year will feature Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson, Rockbox Symphonic Orchestra, and Manu Lavin & The Devil Blues. As this takes place on Bastille Day weekend, there is sure to be a real party atmosphere.

The summer ends with the Mt Blanc Rally. This takes place over September 5th, 6th and 7th. The event is a must for car fans, with all the rally cars displayed in town before the race, as well as a number of other classic cars. The race itself takes place on various roads around the area, with great vantage points available for fans to watch the action.
