featured in News & reviews Author Alice Gregr, Morzine Reporter Updated

The snow is falling and it looks like March is going to be a bumper month in the Portes du Soleil.

This part of the season is not only known for its amazing conditions (sunshine, blue skies and plenty of snow), but the calendar is jam packed with amazing activities to make your stay in the region that extra bit special. Some of the biggest artists of the moment are in town for two major music festivals and the ski conditions look set to be perfect!

Rock the Pistes Festival

The not to be missed events in March include the “Rock the Pistes” music festival, which is taking place across the region from the 19th-25th March. Some really big names are taking centre stage at the event, which is free to attend, making it one of the most popular weeks of the year in the Portes du Soleil.

This year the lineup is really special with headline performances from Basement Jaxx and newcomer Rag’n’bone man, made famous for his recent track, Human. The free gigs are taking place all over the Portes du Soleil but Avoriaz is the festival’s main hub so we don’t have to travel far to experience the buzz of amazing music in a stunning location.

You can find Rag’n’bone man in Avoriaz on the 23rd March with Basement Jaxx kicking things off on the 19th.

Snowboxx Festival, Avoriaz

Snowboxx Festival

The Snowboxx music festival is also returning to Avoriaz in March. The event, which is working alongside Rock the Pistes, is taking place from the 18th to the 25th March in the centre of the resort.

It brings a selection of amazing DJs to town and we can expect a huge party atmosphere as we head towards the end of the 2016/17 winter season. It’s not all about the music either, think giant snowball fights, karaoke booths, paintball and human bowling!

Ski Color, Les Gets

Ski Colour - Les Gets

The 11th of March marks the day that skiing becomes artistic. Participants taking place in the Ski Colour event wear white and ski down the face of Mont Chery in Les Gets. The aim is to finish the run covered in as much coloured paint as possible. You’ll pass through the middle of paint explosions before finishing at the bottom of the slope. The Ski Colour village at the bottom of the mountain comes complete with live music and plenty of activities. It’s a pretty random event but loads of fun for the whole family.

Also in Les Gets, you can enjoy oyster tasting evenings at La Biskatcha restaurant every Tuesday evening. Keep on eye on the events calendar as they also host regular live music nights here too. On Monday nights head to La Pivotte restaurant for a taste of some local specialities on their Savoyarde evenings.

Torchlit Descents

The Torchlit descent continues to take place every Thursday throughout March in Morzine. Skiers, instructors from the ESF ski school and often lots of local children, make their way down the face of the Pleney, in the dark, carrying torches.

It’s spectacular to watch as the skiers and their little red lights weave down the front of the mountain. This takes place every Thursday at around 19:30 if the weather is good.

St Patrick's Day

It’s St Patrick’s day on the 17th March, and Morzine loves an excuse to celebrate. There are plenty of events happening around town but Morzine’s Irish bar, Dixies is of course the place to be.

Enjoy a pint of Guinness whilst listening to one of Morzine’s favourite bands, the Dixie Micks. Talking of live music, keep your eyes open for a host of amazing apres gigs taking place throughout the month.

Wintertrail Oxfam, near Avoriaz

Sports & Competitions

If you like participating in endurance sport, then why not sign up for the Oxfam Wintertrail, which is taking place across the Portes du Soleil on 4th March. It’s a charity event, which sees participants walking 60km in snow over the mountains of Chatel and the Abondance valley. It’s to raise money for Oxfam but takes in some of the most stunning scenery in the region. The walk takes place from the 4th March and walkers are expected to rack up 30 hours on foot before completing the huge distance.

The Morzine Derby takes place on 11th March, with teams racing around the Chamossiere bowl. This event is all-inclusive with skiers, snowboarders, telemarkers and sledgers taking part and racing to the bottom of the mountain.

Later on in the month it’s the turn of some of the world’s best downhill skiers to get you jumping and cheering! From 20th March the 64th Alpine Customs Officers European Championships is in town. This event runs for 4 days and sees competitions including slalom, cross-country and biathlon taking place across the region. It’s a great chance to get involved in the action whilst also enjoying the snow.

Ice Hockey, Chamonix

Ice Hockey

If you prefer to spectate then there’s plenty on offer for you too! Why not pop to the Morzine Ice rink and watch the Morzine-Chamonix Pionniers take on Strasbourg on 7th March?

The atmosphere of a live ice hockey match can’t be beaten. This particular match takes place at 20:30 so wrap up warm and get ready to cheer.

The Eskimo Ball, Morzine

Eskimo Ball

On 28th March the Eskimo Ball is back and this time they're taking over l'Opera nightclub with a great line up of DJ's. Doors open at midnight, tickets cost 10 euros and the party carries on until 05:00.
