It’s a new year in Morzine and both the town and the slopes have emptied out after a hectic New Year. It’s one of the best times to visit as the snow is almost always good and lift queues are at their shortest.

If you’re heading to Morzine in January, then there are plenty of fantastic events and activities to get involved in when you’re here. We’ve been looking through all the what’s ons to bring you the best of the best for the coming month, and what a line up we’ve found for you. Learn more in our Events Calendar for this month, this season and beyond.

Why come to Morzine in January?

After the Christmas holidays are over, January is the quietest part of the main winter season in Morzine – the only weeks with quieter pistes are the very ends of the season in early December and late April. This means you can have the slopes to yourselves and rarely have to queue for a lift. Despite the quiet slopes, almost every lift will be open and the pistes should be kept in good condition. Quiet conditions on the mountain don’t translate into quiet nights in the town as outside the school holidays, there are fewer families and more adult visitors. This means that while it is usually easy enough to get a table at a restaurant, the bars are lively with plenty of live music and party nights to keep you entertained.

What are the weather and snow conditions like in January in Morzine?

In January, the days start to get longer and the sun gets higher in the sky. As a result, the slopes see more hours of sunshine than in December. However, the temperature still tends to be cold and we can get a lot of snow. At the moment, the forecast is for wall to wall sunny days as we go into January. However, there is more than enough snow to open all of the pistes in the resort and conditions on the runs are good but sometimes hard.

On Wednesdays, a market is held in the Carrefour car park, in the centre of town. Morzine has a long tradition as a market town dating back 1,000 years and anyone wanting to try some local produce, in particular the cheeses that the French Alps specialise in, should pay it a visit.
