Lots of fresh snow & more on the way in Morzine

More snow has fallen in Morzine in the last 24 hours

featured in Snow report Author Giles Towler, Morzine Reporter Updated

The cloudy skies of Tuesday finally opened up and the snow started falling heavily throughout the day on Wednesday. There is now an incredible 175 centimetres total snow depth at the lower altitudes and 240 centimetres on the higher slopes. There has been a snowfall of around 50 or 60 centimetres in the last day and a half, and there is still more on the way.

The current forecast suggests that there may be rainfall in Morzine itself but plenty of snowfall just a little further up. It should be noted as well that the forecast has got the freezing level wrong recently and there has been more snow in town that forecast, so fingers crossed that this turns out to be the case.

On the mountain conditions are excellent. There is deep powder to the sides of the pistes and the pistes themselves have been well groomed and are better than ever.

Visibility is not good at the moment, understandably with all the clouds around dumping snow, so staying in the trees is still probably the best option at the moment. The weather is currently expected to clear for New Year's Eve before closing in again on New Year's Day.

The slopes are starting to get crowded, as could be expected for the week leading up to New Year, and things are sure to get worse next week. Certain areas are usually a bit quieter and are a good bet to avoid the worst of the New Year crowds. On the Morzine side, Nyon is usually a bit quieter. In Les Gets, Mont Chery is a favourite destination during busy periods for those in the know looking to get away from the crowds. The back side, in particular, is almost always quiet.

The slopes on the Nyon/Pleney/Les Gets side are immaculate at the moment so it is not necessary to go too far afield looking for amazing snow. Almost all of the Pleney and Chamossiere areas are open now, and Nyon is fully open. In Les Gets only the board parks and one black run - The Gazelle - are not open now.

Those wishing to head further from town will also find excellent conditions heading over towards Avoriaz. The slopes of Lindarets are always very busy at this time of year, however. Heading just a little bit further away, for example towards Chatel via Linga, the crowds will thin out a bit and the snow condition is also perfect. Heading even further away - over towards Torgon or Morgins - and you will find even fewer people.

The visibility on the higher slopes, where there are no trees, is very bad at the moment. The high winds and cold temperatures also mean that heading too high is not a very appealing prospect right now, although when the weather clears conditions up there should be incredible.

The off-piste snow is currently waist deep and light. Conditions are better than at any point last year and look set to get even better. There have been high winds, however, and the avalanche risk is currently 3 out of 5, so caution is advised when going off-piste.

The expected stormy weather at the weekend could make travel to and from resort challenging and, with the New Years crowds heading to the mountains, there are sure to be delays. Anyone making the journey (especially on Saturday when the weather is expected to be at its worst) should allow extra time for their journey. There have also been a number of cars going off the roads which have not been cleared in time, so drive carefully. The town is generally very good at getting the roads cleared promptly, it’s just the sheer volume of snow that has fallen that has made this a much bigger task, and no one is complaining about that.
