Deep, deep snow all over the Portes du Soleil

Heavy snowfall over the weekend has got February off to a great start

After a dry couple of weeks a big storm came in over the weekend bringing plenty of fresh snow.

Heavy winds initially meant that most of Avoriaz was closed on Saturday, with only the Stade chair open on the Prodains side. More was open in the more sheltered areas around Lindarets but it was not easy to get there as the Tour chairlift that links up with this area was closed. Eventually the heavy winds even shut down Lindarets.

However, by Sunday the wind had dropped considerably and the snow continued falling. The snow fell all day Sunday and into Monday with the snow conditions improving accordingly.

In terms of snow conditions, Monday has been probably the best day of the season so far, despite less than perfect visibility. Approximately fifty to sixty centimetres has fallen, making excellent off piste conditions with deep powder. The best off piste is currently in the trees, due to the fact that they avoided the worst of the wind and because they offer the best visibility.

With the slopes starting to get busier for the hectic school holiday period, the snow has come at the perfect time. More snow is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday and this should be enough to keep the slopes well covered for a while now. The total snow depth is ninety centimetres at the top of the mountain and seventy centimetres towards the bottom of the mountain.

Currently 190 out of 198 lifts are open throughout Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets and 276 out of 332 pistes. Some of the black runs in the Arare/Hauts Forts area which have not been open all season, such as the Coupe Du Monde, have still not been opened although hopefully this will change soon. Conditions are also good around Chatel, with fifty six lifts open and fifty two of seventy five runs open.

The roads have been dangerous for the past couple of days, although things have improved as they have been cleared. Anyone driving out should make sure that they bring snow chains with them, as there is more snow on the way.

As the mountain is getting busier it is a good idea to head to the quieter areas. Mont Chery in Les Gets is usually quiet, Nyon also has smaller queues and less crowds. Over on the Avoriaz side Linga over towards Torgon and Morgins is also generally less crowded.

The current forecast suggests more snow this week and then sunshine next week, meaning that next week could be perfect!
