Summer sun brings serious fun to Morzine

featured in Activity reviews Author Alice Gregr, Morzine Reporter Updated

As the summer get into full swing, so does the incredible line up of fun heading to the Portes du Soleil. We’ve spent the week finding the best sunspots, nights out and day trips to help make your holiday the most memorable yet, but with a little help from leather, motorbikes ad music- we’re about to make it even better!

The temperatures are soaring across the Portes du Soleil; the shorts are out, the flip-flops on and the snow gear hidden behind mountain bikes. The party vibe is really getting going and it won’t be long before the resort is swarming with tourists and holidaymakers. As we head towards August the weekends are set to get really busy with a wealth of activities, festivals an events heading into town. Whatever your cup of tea, there’s something or everyone and it’s looking like it’ll be a very special summer.

IF YOU LIKE LIVE MUSIC:

There are plenty of live music nights already underway in Morzine, from live performances in various bars by bands such as the Cab Collective, the Buskers Zuri Aura and loads of local DJS. Beanies in Morzine, the new “La Bouche a Oreille” (word of mouth) bar in Saint Jean d’Aulps and Le Tremplin are just some of the bars, which throw regular music nights in the hope of tempting in summer revellers.

On a slightly larger scale, there are big concerts coming to town as well. Toto made famous by their hits “Hold the line” and “Africa” are here as part of the Harley Days Weekend. Bikers from around the world descend on Morzine for 4 days from the 11th July- they’ll ride alpine routes together whilst celebrating everything about motorbiking. It’s a popular weekend and brings in thousands of people to resort. What better way to end the festival than a free performance by Toto? The band will be complemented by spectacular firework displays as well as France celebrates Bastille Day at the same time.

There are loads of other festivals heading into the Portes du Soleil in the coming months so if Toto isn’t your thing, then don’t worry. There’s Rock in Chatel on the 17th July, a week of free concerts in Les Gets (starting on the 10th of August) and if you fancy providing the music, plenty of open mic nights across the region.

IF YOU LIKE CHALLENGING YOURSELF:

If your idea of entertainment is more about being active and sporty, then you’ve also come to the right place. You can test yourself against other like- minded crazy people on foot, bike or even in water. There are competitions and events going on across the summer, which will really get your competitive streak going.

Why not attempt to set a record by being the fastest road biker to climb the route to Avoriaz, why not challenge yourself to a 40 km trail run around the PDS, you can even battle it out on the mountain bike trails in Les Gets for the Alpine enduro battle. Whatever your sporting fancy, you’re likely to find something to test yourself whilst you’re here on your holiday. If there are no structured events when you’re here though, we’ve got plenty of challenges up our sleeves. Why not walk the Morzine three peaks? Run a marathon? Or climb the mighty Joux Plane? Let us know how you get on!!

IF YOU LIKE BE ENTERTAINED:

If you’re the type of person who likes to sit down with a nice glass of wine and be entertained then there’s a heap of events going on during the summer that are probably just what you’re looking for. If you’ve brought the children with you then look out for the man puppet shows, magic shows, book readings and free concerts that happen in the centre of town.

There’s a week that’s dedicated to children as well, which brings the village alive with colour, balloons and entertainment. If you’re after something a little more grown up, head to the open-air cinema nights at Lake Montriond, Cinema Rex in the Centre of town or check out what’s happening at the Palais des Sport. From plays to concerts, gala dinners and dances, there’s an extensive list of events happening in their main conference centre throughout the summer.

So as you can see, 2015 is going to be a busy one! And you’ll be pleased to know, I’ve only just scratched the surface! Tomorrow I’ll be back but this time it’s all about the biking, hiking, lifts and how you go exploring this beautiful place! It’s hot work...
