Les Chevrelles Restaurant Review

Get away from the crowds and taste some authentic savoyard food

Les Gets has no shortage of good restaurants to pick from in both winter and summer; however, few are quite as special as Les Chevrelles. If you’re looking for something a little magical and you’re prepared to go on a bit of an adventure to find your food then this place should be at the top of your list of places to try.

It’s a little mountain restaurant hidden high up on the path to Mont Caly which is about 5km from the centre of Les Gets. It’s not easy to get to, but this is where the adventure starts.

In winter you can get to Les Chevrelles by hiking up to it or by skiing to it via Mont Chery. By foot you follow a steep windy path all the way to the little hamlet where the restaruant is. It isn’t a long walk and is well tracked so is easily do-able, even in the depths of winter. To get to the path, you drive up the road to Mont Caly, which can be found at the roundabout by the Perrieres ski run in Les Gets. When you can’t drive any further along this road, you’ll see a little wooden sign that says “restaurant”. You park up here and then follow the path for about a kilometre.

The path itself winds you up through a forest, which is stunning in both winter and summer. We kept our eyes out for wildlife as we made our way to the restaurant. There were plenty of tracks around suggesting there were plenty of animals to spot. It took us around half an hour to reach the restaurant but we decided to walk a little further to really earn our lunch. We skirted round the top of the peak of Mont Caly, which towers over Les Gets at 1,490m.

If you’re looking for a real challenge you can keep walking to the top of Mont Chery, which on good days is clearly visible in the distance. Sadly on the day we went, the weather was pretty grey and miserable and the clouds covered up the surrounding mountains. However, I’m promised on fair weather days Les Chevrelles boasts at 360-degree view of the Portes du Soliel. You can even see as far as Mont Blanc when the skies are clear.

After throwing some snowballs and enjoying some of the last snow of the season we were ready to head back to the restaurant for lunch. We hadn’t seen anyone on our journey so expected it to be pretty quiet. However when we arrived there were several people already tucked up in the warm enjoying some food. We had the dog with us and weren’t sure if he’d be able to come in, however when we went inside there were already a couple of dogs snuggled down under the tables so it’s safe to say it’s a very dog friendly spot.

The restaurant is located in a beautiful wooden building with tables outside for the summer and plenty of seating inside for the chillier days. We were lucky that it was quiet when we went but are told it’s usually a good idea to book a table. We were shown into the back room of the restaurant, which looks out over the hillside, it really is an idyllic setting.

The owner of the restaurant, who was clearly happy to see us, handed us the menu. He was really welcoming and couldn’t do enough to make sure we had a nice meal. The menu is full of Savoyard specialities like raclette and fondue and it also has some salads, meat platters and lighter bites to choose from. Everything is priced between 10 and 20 euros unless you want to opt for one of the bigger sharing or meat dishes, which are slightly more costly. We chose to have salads this time but will certainly be returning to sample some of the specialities in the not too distant future.

The food didn’t take long to arrive and it was fresh, well presented and delicious. It was just what we needed after a morning of fresh air and walking in the hills. I chose the basic salad, it came with eggs, olives and lovely crusty bread. He chose the goats cheese salad, which was huge! By the time we’d finished our food we were feeling pretty fully and cosy. Leaving the warm restaurant and heading out into the gloomy weather was going to be very difficult.

After a quick coffee we settled up and headed out into the cold. The little walk down to the car was a lot quicker than the way up but still gave us chance to let the food go down. We think we saw a little fox dash in front of us on the path so all our wildlife spotting wasn’t in vain! We had a lovely day out on Mont Caly and will certainly be returning to Les Chevrelles soon. It’s a hidden gem and well worth visiting if you get the chance to head in that direction. It’s perfect if you want to get away from the crowds for the day and the food is also delicious. We can’t wait to see what the view is like on a good day.
