La Chanterelle Restaurant Review

A mountain dining experience not to be missed

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Alice Gregr, Morzine Reporter Updated

La Chanterelle restaurant sits at the base of Mont Chery on the back side of the mountain to Les Gets which makes it relatively unknown, although it's one you should definitely try and visit if you're staying in the area.

If you're skiing on Mont Chery you can reach the restaurant by taking the red or the black piste down to the bottom and then following a short track to the door, or you can drive to it through the beautiful villages of Essert Romand and the Cote d'Arbroz to get there, which is what we did.

a mountain restaurant

The restaurant is tucked away from the main road at the top of the famous cycling route - the col de l'Encrenaz. On the main terrace of the restaurant you'll enjoy some stunning views- it overlooks the Roc d'Enfer mountain range and in the far distance on a good day, it's possible to see Mont Blanc.

The terrace has its own large wood burning fire and outside bar. It sits directly next to the piste so when the weather is good it's possible for the children to sledge and play in the snow whilst you eat lunch or have a glass of vin chaud. If it's too cold to sit outside then you can take yourself inside to the main restaurant and bar areas. Warmed by large roaring fires, it’s very snuggly and perfect either as a stop off during a hard day of skiing or for a big meal after a long day on the snow.

The restaurant itself is a large room with huge windows which look out across the same incredible views as the outside terrace. It's filled with large wooden tables and plenty of seating for large groups. With its comfy sofa areas it's easy to get settled in for the whole afternoon!

a lamb roast

It's a big year for La Chanterelle as the team there has decided to change what they're offering in the hope of bringing something different to the area. This year they're focusing on affordable, hearty mountain food with a twist - including hog and lamb roasts along with more traditional tucker. We visited the restaurant on their opening night of the season and were hugely impressed by the friendliness of the staff, the atmosphere of the restaurant and the quality of the food. We were treated to delicious appetisers alongside a large leg of lamb with some perfectly seasoned Mediterranean couscous.

Throughout the season, La Chanterelle is also starting to run a weekly night of entertainment. Each Wednesday the restaurant is planning to run a themed evening with live music, performances from local acts and comedy nights. They’re calling it “Big Wednesdays” and will provide a taxi service to get you to and from the restaruant as part of your ticket. It will also include a full three course meal for you to enjoy whilst you watch whatever entertainment is on offer. These evenings take place on chalet night off, which means it'll be a great place to head to if you're looking to do something different to do with your free evening.

a party table

Along with their evening meal and lunch offering the team at La Chanterelle is also offering breakfasts and brunches this year. You can start your morning on the first lift of the day from Les Gets and speed your way over the mountain to the restaurant just in time for a bacon butty or some delicious baked treats! There will also be a lively après scene at La Chanterelle this year as they’re hoping to make the most of their large outdoor terrace. Think live bands, amazing views and fun for the whole family.

I have to say I was unsure what to expect with such a remote restaurant but it's a classy venue and really does offer something new and exciting to Morzine and Les Gets. We're excited to sample the food on offer there on the ever changing menu and will be back again to do just that in the not too distant future.
