l'Aubergade Restaurant Review

A great, family friendly bar and restaurant with amazing cocktails

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Alice Gregr, Morzine Reporter Updated

We headed to The Aubergade on a Friday night after a long week of work; just to have a couple of much needed wind-down drinks. However, once you snuggle down into one of their comfy sofas and the lights are dimmed, it’s pretty hard to leave…especially when they bring their specialist cocktail menu over!

We’ve had many a night at the Aubergade that has gone from “a quiet few” to “let’s just have one more!” It’s around 10 euros for a cocktail but between 9 and 10pm some of these drop to 6€ which make spending a night getting tipsy much more affordable.

We first tried The Aubergade last summer when they were just finding their feet with a brand new menu. They were also trying out a whole heap of brand new ideas, which were aimed at helping the restaurant to stand out from the crowd. 6 months later and we’re back to find that not only have the ideas worked but also that The Aubergade is now one of Morzine's favourite après ski venues with popular entertainment nights and some amazing tucker!

The Aubergade also hosts a lot of music nights and special events, all of which appear to be a great success with holidaymakers, seasonnaires and the expat community. They hold frequent live music nights; they also show live sport and in the summer hold film nights under the stars. It also helps that the Aubergade is really child friendly. It backs onto the base of the Pleney, so there’s plenty of room for sledging and playing in the snow. There’s also a small playroom at the front of the restaurant, which is used by childcare companies but there are also games on hand to keep the children entertained. Similarly in the summer, when the snow has disappeared, there’s a crazy golf course, which also provides hours of entertainment.

We hadn’t planned on eating here on Friday night, but when the menu was brought over for us to have a look at we couldn’t resist. It's really varied and creative and offers a massive selection of food including tapas, smaller dishes, salads, burgers, winter warmers and delicious puddings. It also has a really good offering for children and also for vegetarians. As a veggie, it can often be difficult to find something that isn’t just cheese and it appears that The Aubergade is aware of this. They give people like me a much wider choice, which is much appreciated!

So, we decided to order food. I went for a beetroot and cheese salad and he decided on something to remind him of home: Bangers and Mash! We didn’t have to wait long for the food to arrive despite it being quite a busy evening for the restaurant. I have to say that my salad was something very special. I was served with nuts, leaves, beetroot and a massive slab of goat’s cheese on a delicious garlicky bread base. I’ve tried a fair few salads in my time in France and this is certainly sitting at the top of my list of favourites at the moment! It was filling, fresh and original. I’d order that again any time. His bangers and mash was served with a peas and delicious gravy and disappeared in the blink of an eye. He was very full but then it was a winter warmer so I’m not sure what he expected! It costs around 13€ for a main meal so is pretty average when it comes to price however some of the drinks are a little costly, if you’re watching the pennies, I’d avoid the prosecco and stick to the beer!

We have nothing but good stuff to say about the Aubergade. The staff are always friendly, up for a chat and happy to serve you. It’s also worth watching out for their “Bring your own” BBQs in the Summer, their Sunday Roasts throughout the year and their delicious ever changing specials boards. Happy Hour at The Aubergade is between 4 and 6pm every night and on Wednesdays, when you spend 10€ on drinks, you can have your board or skis waxed for free.

I’m really impressed with all the ideas coming out of The Aubergade- and can’t wait to see what’s next for this popular bar. I’m told that the beetroot burger is well worth trying so I’ll be back again soon to give that a go. I’ll report back soon..
