Morzine Apres Ski Report: 29th January 2012

Another Snowy week in Morzine

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Tom Freeman & Victoria Mills, Updated

Yet another week has flown by. We’ve been blessed with more great snow and the town is looking gorgeous and white again. It’s been a fun week with a good busy atmosphere around town, without being too packed on the piste.

Last Sunday afternoon we decided to head to Dixies to watch some sport. Tom in particular has felt the drought of football since being in Morzine. Tottenham were taking on Man City and, after a somewhat slow first half, as the goals started coming the atmosphere in the bar became much more lively. It seems that even when most other places in town are quiet during the middle of the day, Dixies stills pulls in a good crowd eager not to miss their team. Located near the bottom of Rue de Bourg, they show all Premiership matches on Sky TV throughout the bar and many other live sports events as well.

Wednesday night was definitely the big one this week and led to our worst hangovers of the season so far! After a hard day's skiing we decided it was time to hit the après at a relatively early 3.30pm, so headed for the regular Wednesday afternoon party at Le Tremplin (at the base of the Pleney slopes). When we arrived it was just starting to fill up so we managed to bag a table under the canopy and got going on the beer and vin chaud. The place was soon packed and as usual the Bass Camp party started at 4pm, with the DJs and waiters alike all dressed in wonderfully bright Retro Onesies (to anyone who has not seen these yet they are the old school all in one ski suits available for hire in town).

Although it is sometimes hard to work out where it all goes wrong on a night out, it seems obvious that someone’s bright idea of having three pints and Jaeger bombs before 5.30pm is a fairly lethal start to a big night! We managed to drag ourselves away from Le Tremplin at about 6pm, but only so that we could go home and change into something more suitable than our ski boots for the rest of the evening.

Back in town, we all went for dinner at Le Grillon which is situated along Route de la Plagne. We actually went for dinner there a few weeks ago and it was the great food that brought us back again, this time with a big group of friends who were staying in town. We were seated upstairs on a long table, perfect for our group of twelve and the atmosphere was suitable for a fun and lively dinner. Yet again the food was amazing, we tried one of the meat specialities called La Broche and could not have been happier. A 250gr piece of rump steak skewered on a mini flaming spit roast right in front of you, ready to be carved off when cooked to your liking and served with two sauces, chips and some sides…what more could we want! Maybe not one for the non-carnivorous but it definitely ticked all our boxes and I’ve been dreaming of it ever since. Other dishes well worth a try are the three meat Pierre Chaude for two or more people and the wonderful tartiflette, a true French classic that Le Grillon cook to perfection.

After a lovely long dinner, we all headed up the street to the Tibetan Bar. It is situated along Route du Pleney and open from 2pm-2am, with Happy Hour from 4-6pm daily. Here the Jaeger bombs came out in full force again and the night swiftly descended into a rather drunken oblivion…the kind of night where none of us seemed to recognise half the photos the next day! There was lots of jumping around and some dancing on tables and our more vocally gifted friend even managed to convince the DJ to let her belt out a rendition of ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ while we all cheered along. Tibettan’s lovely owner and manager Tony then very kindly came over with a tray full of creamy toffee shots for us, although I think this may have been the start of our downfall, already being close to the edge! The night ended all too soon and although I’m not sure some of us were ready to go home at 2am, I think it was probably for the best.

Although we did in fact make it out and up the mountain on Thursday (albeit at about 1pm), the real reason was only because we had absolutely nothing resembling a good English fry up in the apartment so had to drag ourselves out of bed to get food. So what better remedy than to head up and pig out on the mountain…then ski back down again to bed. Unfortunately our heavy heads meant we weren’t up for celebrating Australia Day on Thursday as the thought of drinking was not good. However, for those of you who did get involved in the celebrations around town or up at Nyon, we hope you had a great time, maybe next year we’ll save ourselves!

So onto the coming week and here’s a look at what’s happening in and around town:

  • On Tuesday 31st Jan at the Pleney the ESF instructors will put on a History of Skiing show, finishing with a Torch Lit Descent. From 6pm with free vin chaud on offer.
  • On Thursday 2nd Feb there is night skiing on the Pleney slopes from 8-10pm.
  • On Friday 23rd from 4.30-6pm the Great Musical Quiz will be hosted at the Office de Tourisme, with prizes to be won for naming the soundtracks to famous TV shows and series.

The Morzine-Avoriaz Penguins have another match on Tuesday night this week, where they take on rivals Grenoble at the Palais de Sport at 8.30pm.

So that’s all for another week, enjoy all the lovely new snow we’ve just had and of course…

Bon Après
