Morzine Apres Ski Report: 13th January 2012

A very sunny start to New Year Apres

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Tom Freeman & Victoria Mills, Updated

The post Christmas and New Year lull has officially set in this week with the slopes being the quietest they have been all season. Many of the French and English holiday makers have gone home after the festive period with most people back to work to start their 2012. So although the slopes have been amazing with 5 days of sunshine so far (and set to continue until Tuesday at least), it’s been a fairly quiet week in town compared to previous weeks. Nevertheless, there is still lots going on if you are in town this week or next.

This week we revisited one of the town favourites, Bar Robinson, situated near the bottom of Rue de Bourg. Arriving at around 5pm to the classic sight of steamed up windows and a crowd of Mutzig drinking smokers outside, the bar was as busy as ever. After getting some drinks our group huddled around a small table, half seated and half perched on the window sill. Although Robo’s feels more like a town hall (or perhaps a community centre) than a swanky Alpine bar, it’s always welcoming with a great laid back atmosphere. Serving daily until 7.30pm we highly recommend a visit to this Morzine classic and you’re always bound to bump into someone you know.

Our weekly culinary treat this week was to a lovely restaurant called La Dez’Alp, situated down Rue du Bourg (next to Intersport). A relatively new establishment for Morzine, after moving from their more out of town location in the past year. It has a great choice of traditional dishes and also some local fish specialities from the Ardoisieres fishery. As we had some family staying in town we managed to get a lovely big round table, which we always feel is much more sociable and fun. The service is very good and we can safely say that everyone ate very well, with a personal recommendation for the Savoyard Chicken Delight. This was literally THE biggest chicken breast we have ever seen stuffed with ham and alpine cheese and served with a Chantarelle mushroom sauce, amazing!

After spending the day skiing the Les Gets and Nyon slopes yesterday, there was of course only one place to enjoy the Après straight from the piste. Le Tremplin, located at the bottom of the Pleney slope, continue to host their weekly Bass Camp night on the terrace with a live DJ. As usual it was pretty packed from about 4pm onwards, so the only seats we found were just beyond the range of the outdoor heaters. Although a little chilly after a while (generally rectified by ordering more vin chaud) the silver lining was that we could actually chat to our friends without having to shout! This is always a good après party and the atmosphere is really lively with a good mix of young and old. Bass Camp nights at Le Tremplin are every Wednesday and Friday and there is live music on a Sunday, so this is definitely the place to be if you are over Pleney side of town.

Looking into the coming week here’s a taste of what’s coming up and what not to miss.

The next ice hockey match is on Saturday 14th, with our Morzine-Avoriaz Penguins taking on Dijon. After the excitement of the last match we saw on Boxing Day, we’re expecting this to be another good night out and a welcome alternative to a another night of drinking and stuffing ourselves with French cheese! Held at the Palais du Sport the game starts at 8:30pm and tickets can be bought from the tourist office or on the door (Adult 15€, Child 10€).

On Monday 16th the weekly Welcome to Morzine drinks will be held outside the Office de Tourisme at 4pm, so pop along for a free Chocolate or Green Chaud.

On Tuesday 17th at the Pleney the ESF instructors will be putting on their History of Skiing show, finishing with a Torch Lit descent of the Pleney.

Chez Roger, with it’s cosy heated and covered terrace and sheepskin chair covers, has live music from new bands on a Tuesday and Friday and Après-ski every afternoon from 4-6pm. Located along Rue de Bourg, it is open daily from 3pm until 2am and we really love this place.

Lastly but well worth a mention, especially as the weather is set to be bright and sunny all week, is the local market on a Wednesday. Held in the car park by the Post Office from 8am until around 1pm you will find a host of traditional butchers, fishmongers and grocers selling local produce such as tasty cheeses and fine sausages.

While we’re on the subject, our secret recommendation for the best selection of saucissons and cheese in town is Le Marche des Alpes along Rue de Bourg. An amazing selection of different flavours of saucisson including a wild boar and even a blueberry one. Check it out if you happen to be passing.

That’s all from us so Au Revoir for another week. Have fun but please keep your fingers and toes crossed for some more snow or we’ll be sporting sexy goggle tans before long!

Bon Après
