There's still tonnes of fun to be had this summer in Morzine

We've technically only got one month to go until the lifts close and interseason descends on the Portes du Soleil. However before it does, we have an amazing month of fun and events ahead.

August is one of the hottest, most beautiful months in Morzine and Les Gets and this one promises to be extra special.

Music

There are always loads of musical events going on in Morzine and Les Gets and August is no exception. Whatever your taste is, you're likely to find something you'll like. If you like Jazz and chilled out music, then head to Les Gets for the Lounge Music Festival. There are over 35 free concerts taking place including reggae, jazz and pop. The streets of Les Gets will be filled with music up until the 14th of August when a performance from Florent Pagny will close the show.

If you like music with a Spanish feel and fancy a bit of a dance then head up to Avoriaz on the 19th August. The resort is hosting a dance festival with Zumba and salsa sessions. Sangria at the ready! For 120 hours dancing will fill the resort and it promises to be another fun week on the top of the mountains.

It's always worth keeping an eye out on the different bar's pages for weekly events. You're likely to find local acts such as the Cab Collective, The Pedestrians and Amy Dearlove giving impromptu performances around the region.

Food

You're in the Portes du Soleil. This means there's always something going on for the foodies amongst us. Whether it involves tasting the local cheese, having a bit of a treat from a local bakery or sampling a Savoyard speciality, you won't have to go far to find some delicious food. However, not all of the events this August have a particularly French feel.

After the success of last year, The Aubergade is reviving its popular Cider, Ale and Sausage festival. We went last year and had a great time sampling delicious ciders, different flavoured sausages from around the UK and listening to some great live music. They're planning to do the same on the 13th of August.

If you fancy sampling a bit more of a local taste then you can always head to the weekly Morzine market. It takes place in the large Carrefour car park on a Wednesday morning. There are cheese, meat, bread and cake stalls, all with samples for you to try. It's easy to spend a fortune at this market because everything is so delicious.

Bring your own meat barbecues and grills seem to be taking off in Morzine and Les Gets and in the sunshine in the shadow of spectacular landscape, there really is nothing like eating outdoors and watching the sun go down. Head to the Aubergade on a Tuesday, Bar National on a Monday and La Paika in Les Gets for your meat fix!

Sport

If the excitement of the Tour de France passing through Morzine has tickled your sporting taste buds, then don't worry, August is still a great month for sport in the Portes du Soleil. Don't put your bikes away just yet the snow isn't due for a while yet. On the 2nd August an introduction to trail running for girls is taking place. It's a special event to help people explore the sport and the region. The course includes 600 metres of climbing, 15 km of descending and organised food and drink stops. If you've always fancied giving mountain running a go then this could be the event for you. You'll learn skills whilst also being shown some of the most beautiful tracks and trails in the area.

If you're more of a seasoned trail runner then pop the 13th August in your diary. It's the day of the Trail des Hauts Forts. A 27 or 46km race through the mountains of Morzine. You'll head out of town and up the famous ridge line to Avoriaz. It's a really popular and spectacular race especially if you love trail running.

If you enjoyed the Etape du Tour or the Tour de France and fancy a bit more cycling action then why not head out to cheer along riders taking part in the Le Cure de France. It's a huge charity ride which sees people tackling some pretty huge rides to raise money for the Marsden Cancer Charity. They'll be passing through Morzine around the 31st August when they travel down to Albertville. I'm sure they'd appreciate some friendly encouragement and as we've already proved with the incredible scenes at the Tour, we're pretty good at cheering cyclists on!

Kids

August is still very much part of the summer holidays which means there's still loads going on for children around Morzine and Les Gets. There are treasure hunts along the river in Morzine, games of Quidditch in the tourist office square, story readings in the towns main library along with a huge school fete on the 14th August. The Kermesse in the centre of town includes stalls, performances and different workshops. It's well worth visiting, especially if you have children in tow! Read our family activities guide for more ideas.

All in all, August in the Portes du Soleil is pretty special. But then we think every month is. You're bound to enjoy some beautiful weather, stunning countryside and tasty treats. We'll certainly be around to sample most of the above so see you there!
