It seems like only yesterday that we were talking about snow sports, dump alerts and all things winter. Now, the weather is turning and we’re quickly heading towards summer and one of the busiest months in the Portes du Soleil calendar. The eyes of the world will fall on Morzine and Les Gets throughout June as some of the most prestigious sporting events head our way. It’s most definitely a month “not to be missed”.

The excitement about the imminent arrival of the Tour de France is palpable around Morzine and Les Gets with both towns doing all they can to prepare for the big event in July. However, we don’t have to wait that long for some TDF action. On the 5th of June, The Criterium du Dauphine is coming to Les Gets. It’s basically a warm up for the professional riders ahead of the start of the tour. They’ll battle each other up 3.9km to the summit of Mont Chery. It’s a short stage but extremely tough. It’ll be a great opportunity to get a feel for what it’ll be like when the penultimate stage of Le Tour finishes in Morzine later in the summer.

Also on the 5th June, amateur footballers from across Europe will head to Morzine for the European Mountain Football Championships. This competition is seen as the little brother to the Euros. There will be 26 matches over a few days and Morzine’s very own football team will be taking part. In total, 12 countries are represented at the competition. A special pitch has been created at the top of the Pleney meaning players will have to battle additional altitude to prove themselves as true mountain footballers. Throughout the contest, there will be a festival like atmosphere in Morzine with exhibitions and concerts also taking place to mark the occasion.

If downhill biking is more your thing, then don’t worry. You don’t have to wait much longer for some world class MTB action. On the 15th June, Crankworx is coming to Les Gets. It’s a 5-day celebration of everything Mountain biking, with amazing displays from some of the world’s best (and most daring) riders. There are all sorts of events going on over Crankworx that you can get involved in including guided rides with professionals, a girls only ride with mountain bike champion Tahnee Seagrave, up hill challenges and events for children. There’s a real buzz around Crankworx and it promises to be a jaw-dropping spectacle of skill and adrenalin.

On the 19th of June the Morzine-Haute Chablais Cyclosportive takes place. On the day there are two races to choose from, a 92km one and longer 142km ride. The routes take you over some of the most famous cols in the region including the Joux Verte and the Ramaz. It marks the start of what will be an amazing summer for road biking fanatics.

If all of this sport is making you feel tired or if you’re ready for a day out of the saddle then you’ll enjoy the Fete de la Musique on the 21st June. It’s a national festival with concerts, festivals, live music and entertainment popping up all over France. Morzine and Les Gets are no exceptions. There’s usually an amazing atmosphere around town and Lac Montriond is usually the place to be!

One of the biggest events taking place across the Portes du Soleil this year is also taking place in June. On the weekend of the 24th June, mountain bikers from around the world head to the region for the Pass’Portes du Soleil. It’s an opportunity for riders to complete 80km of trail riding around the PDS. Lifts are opened to allow riders to complete the circuit and you can start from a number of places including Morzine and Les Gets. You can explore the amazing landscape and scenery of the region whilst also experiencing a real party like atmosphere. There are food and drink stops all the way around the course and the event has grown into one of the biggest mountain biking events in the world.

June really is going to be an incredible month to be in Morzine and Les Gets. It marks the true start of the summer. Also, don’t forget! This year the lifts are also opening earlier than usual meaning we’ve got even longer to enjoy the mountains.

What with so many incredible events coming to town and if last year’s weather is anything to go by: June is going to be pretty special!
