The Sun is Out in Morzine & So Are The Barbecues!

Well it’s here…summer has arrived!! And we'll help you make it one to remember. Our daily guide to everything summery in the Portes du Soleil will make sure you don’t miss a trick when planning your stay here. From BBQ’s, to events, bar openings to restaurant specials, we’ll make sure you know about it all. This is the place to be come snow or sun…We’ve got it all!

The sun comes out, there’s one thing on everyone’s minds: Cracking open a chilled beer or glass of pimms and popping the meat on the barbie. However, when you’re visiting a strange place, it’s not always easy to know where to go…but don’t worry. That’s where we come in! We’ve been BBQ hunting around the region to find you some of the best places to grill your burgers, or to have them grilled for you..(Somebody has to do it!)

BEST BBQ SPOTS

So you’ve found a BBQ, you’ve done the big BBQ shop and you’ve got the prosecco chilling in the fridge. Now you just need to decide where to go. This is definitely the hardest part of the Morzine BBQ experience. There’s no end of amazing places to visit on your trip here, which will make your BBQ unforgettable.

In summer, when the sun is shining, a visit to the Lake at Montriond has to be on your list of things to do and why not tie it in to your BBQ evening. Park up at the far end of the lake on the road to Les Lindarets and there’s an ideal, open and grassy spot for you to spark up. With views out across surrounding mountains and stunning blue water, it’s an idyllic setting for a BBQ. It keeps the sun until late into the evening too, which is perfect for when the temperatures start to drop.

A little further out of Morzine down the Vallee de la Manche, in a slightly more remote part of the region, is the Lac de Mines d’Or. And again, this spot is a perfect place for a summer BBQ. With stunning views out across the Morzine Valley, the Pleney and the surrounding mountains, it’s tranquil and away from the busy hive of activity you’ll find in the centre of town. There’s also a lovely restaurant and bar up there if you fancy an after dinner drink or perhaps a pudding when it starts to get a little chillier outside.

When the snow melts and the summer meadows start to blossom, there’s no better place to visit for a BBQ or a picnic than Graydon, which sits at the bottom of the Roc d’Enfer. This is a hidden gem in the hills above Saint Jean d’Aulps. When the temperatures start to go up, cowbells can be heard echoing off the mountains for miles around and it really is a true Alpine experience. If there are enough of you to carry the food and BBQ, you can take a short walk up to the base of the ridge and watch chamois gallop across the mountain whilst looking out across the pistes of the St Jean d'Aulps ski area.

These places only scratch the surface of the spots that make ideal settings for summer BBQ’s. If you want to head out exploring to find your own, my top tip is, find the places that keep the sun for the longest as it still gets pretty chilly in the evenings.

BEST BBQ RESTAURANTS

So you want a BBQ but you want a BBQ with out the hard work. You don’t want to have to go to the shops and you certainly don’t want to be standing over a hot flame for hours cooking for other people. That DEFINITELY doesn’t mean you have to miss having the experience though! Loads of restaurants have spotted that there’s a real passion for barbecuing across the Portes du Soleil and many offer special BBQ and Grill nights, which are proving to be really popular with locals, tourists and ex-pats alike. So if you fancy a sausage or a burger but don’t want to do the cooking- listen up!

The Hotel L’Aubergade in the Centre of Morzine runs a weekly, “bring your own meat” BBQ. Every Tuesday from 6pm, the restaurant provides salad, bread, sauces and a chef who will cook your meat. There are DJ’s playing at the event to give it a special summer vibe and it runs throughout the season. It’s a really popular one with tourists, families and locals. If eating and dancing isn’t enough for you, you can always have a go at the retro crazy golf there as well!!

Inferno Bar and Restaurant on the Nyon plateau is really popular for its BBQ and Grill nights. In winter and summer, bikers, hikers, skiiers and snowboarders crowd on the popular terrace to enjoy the last sunny hours of the day. Throughout the season, the team at Inferno throw loads of special events to tempt you in, including their dog friendly days, charity fundraisers and popular BBQ nights. For instance this weekend (4th July) they’re throwing a special Nepal fundraiser, complete with games, family fun and of course plenty of meat!

If your BBQ taste buds haven’t been tickled enough yet then the Boomerang in Les Gets is a must visit! Its chefs are used across Morzine and the Portes du Soleil to provide meat feasts for BBQ events and nights, so if you’re after a taste of steak and beer, it’s the place for you. (Their nachos are pretty incredible as well!)

So as they say, if you can’t take the heat, then quite literally GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN!

Tomorrow - we look at some of the best summer bathing and swimming spots…. whether lakes are your thing or you’re more into pools, streams and waterfalls…. we’ll help you get the summer tan you’re searching for!
