Morzine will enjoy a milder week

7-day weather forecast for the week of 5th March 2018

featured in News & reviews Author Rob Wood, Morzine Reporter Updated

Whilst last week saw the UK being battered by storms and unwanted snowfall, we were happy to see some lovely fresh snow, even if it was a tad on the chilly side. Well, the “Beast” has now been tamed and temperatures are set to be much milder this week.

Barometric pressure currently stands at around 990Mb and a few weak weather fronts are approaching from the Atlantic/Biscay area, which will bring a bit of precipitation. This precipitation will be on and off throughout the week and will bring some light snowfall with a few centimetres likely on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Towards the end of the week, the pressure looks set to rise with the probable arrival of an area of high pressure from the Iberian Peninsula which will bring warmer temperatures and maybe some rain showers.

The all-important North Atlantic Jetstream has returned to a more “normal” location after last week’s hiatus that allowed the cold Siberian weather to move across from the east. The Jetstream starts the week over the Iberian Peninsula before drifting up towards Central Europe on Wednesday and Thursday. This may lead to a slight increase in the winds as the Jetstream passes over us, albeit at around 13km above resort level. By Friday, it will be to our north bringing a rise in temperatures as well.

Monday

A mainly cloudy day with some sunny intervals and light winds. Winds will be southerly in direction, at around 10kmph. Light snowfall at the end of the day when around 10cm is likely. Daytime highs of around -1ºC, with a freeze height of around 1600 metres.

Tuesday

Another mainly cloudy day with snow showers. Winds remain light at around 7kmph but will have backed up to the north in their direction. Around 7 to 10cm of snow is likely. A bit colder than Monday with daytime highs of around -4ºC.

Wednesday

A very similar day to Monday and Tuesday with light snow showers all day. Around 5cm is likely to fall in total and winds will increase slightly to around 15kmph and remain northerly in their direction. A bit chillier with daytime highs of around -6ºC.

Thursday

A windier day as the Jetstream passes above us as winds increase to around 25kmph, which may lead to some intermittent higher lift closures. Snow showers all day and heaviest in the afternoon and around 10cm is likely to fall in total. Daytime highs will be warmer than Wednesday as the Jetstream passes at around -3ºC.

Friday

A largely sunny day, so grab a deckchair and have lunch up on the hill! Afternoon highs will be above zero at around 3ºC, with a freeze height of around 2500 metres. Winds and cloud will build as the day goes on, and the best part of the day will definitely be the morning and early afternoon, so set your alarm early! The increasing cloud cover will bring some snow in the evening when around 7cm is likely to fall.

Saturday

Another mild day when temperatures may reach 6ºC, and with some precipitation likely which may fall as rain at resort level. A freeze height of around 2500 metres will be definitely mean rain at lower elevations. The higher slopes may receive around 10cm of snow. Winds will be mainly southerly in direction, hence the rise in temperature, and be fairly consistent at 10kmph.

Sunday

Sunny intervals with the possibility of some showers. Again with a freeze height of around 2000metres, this may fall as rain at resort level. Daytime resort highs of around 4ºC with light and variable winds (5kmph).
