Buying ski passes can be a daunting prospect. When coming to a new place on holiday, how do you know which pass is right for you? It can seem expensive and it can seem confusing. That’s where we come in.

We’ve been scouring the market to find out the best way for you to acquire that essential piece of plastic that gains you access to one of the most amazing playgrounds in the world... the Portes du Soleil.

What to buy

There are two main types of ski pass if you're coming to Morzine on your ski holiday. You can either get a local area pass which covers Morzine and Les Gets or a full area pass which covers the whole of the Portes du Soleil (including Morzine/Les Gets). Which you decide to get very much depends on the holiday you're looking to have, how long you're in resort and how experienced a skier you are. It also depends on when you are coming.

The Morzine Les Gets pass is more than enough to see you through a week's holiday, especially if the snow is good and perhaps if you're a less experienced skier. There are snow parks, beginner runs, off-piste sectors and some great blue, red and black runs. This area tends to open a little later than Avoriaz each year and tends to close a little earlier as well.

The Portes du Soleil pass opens up the full area. It is a little more expensive than a Morzine pass but it offers you over 650km of pisted runs so, for the more experienced and adventurous skier, it's a no-brainer. Avoriaz is also considerably higher than Morzine and Les Gets which means that, depending on the time of year, the snow can also be more reliable up there.

Amongst these two passes, there are beginner passes for the Avoriaz area too, this simply gives you access to some of the main runs there. You can buy these passes for a maximum of 3 days. This is because it's assumed that once you get your ski legs you'll want to venture further afield. You can also buy day passes for various snowparks, 5-hour passes and pedestrian passes if you just want to head up the mountain to meet friends and family for lunch.

There are also passes available for different age groups. In Morzine and Les Gets there are adult’s and children’s passes, as well as passes for seniors. Make sure you bring proof of age if you're over 65. This can reduce the cost of a 6-day pass by around 30€, which is the cost of a delicious dinner on the mountain, so well worth it! With a Portes du Soleil pass, you can also buy adult, children and senior passes but there's also the option for a youth pass. This applies to teenagers aged 16-19. Again this can mean a saving of around 30€ on a pass so well worth looking into.

When to buy

There are many special offers on for ski passes throughout the year, including deals like “10% off if you book before the end of November”. The only way to uncover these amazing offers is to keep an eye on our Ski Offers Page or the main ski pass websites including ski pass Avoriaz and the ski Morzine tourist websites.

If you're booking accommodation through a chalet company or hotel, then many of these properties will also offer deals on lift passes. Make sure you check when booking your holiday what your company can offer.

Often, the only way to get your passes is when you're here in Morzine. That can be down to not knowing the situation with lift openings, not managing to get organised in time or wanting to wait until you know the area a little better. This is also ok. You may end up paying a little more than if you pre-book online but, for some people, it's more reassuring to do it in person. This is also the best way to buy day and half day passes.

Buying ski passes online

You can pre-order your passes online, often making the most of special offers and deals. You can also look to see which is the most cost effective pass for your group. You'll often find hefty discounts if you book family passes for instance.

The process is really simple. Click on the button below, which will take you to Morzine's main lift pass website. You just need to select the area you want to ski in (Portes du Soleil or Morzine/Les Gets), the duration of the passes, your first ski day and the number of people, including their ages. Any discounts will be automatically applied to the price of your passes.

Add your personal details and state whether you already have a card (in which case you'll need to insert its number) or you don't (a 3€ fee will be added for the card). You can also choose if you want ski insurance or not, which we recommend you get as it's only 3€ per day and can include cancellation cover for another 3€.

You can then create an account with all your personal details and choose to book ski lockers. Ski passes can be delivered to your home address for a 2€ fee, or you can pick them up at the cash desk under the Pleney lift with your confirmation email and an ID. They're open every day from 08:00 to 17:00 from December 23rd. That's it, you're all ready to hit the slopes!

Buying ski passes in resort

The other option, which remains popular is buying your pass at a lift pass office when you get to resort. Be warned, you may have to queue, especially at busy times. But, if you're uncertain of the pass you need or are looking to see how the weather is before buying your pass, then this can be the only option. The lift pass offices are also great at advising exactly which pass is best for you.

You can also buy lift passes through many of the tour operators in Morzine and Les Gets. These companies often secure discounts on lift passes that they can then pass on to you as the customer. Make sure you ask when booking your accommodation. Similarly, if you book ski lessons, some companies include lift passes in the price of your lessons so double check the cost and work out if it's the best solution for you.

What not to do

  • Don't buy a Morzine/Les Gets pass when your ski lessons are in Avoriaz
  • Don't throw out your purchase receipt! If you lose your pass on the mountain this can be the only way to get a replacement
  • Don’t borrow someone else's pass for the day. This isn't allowed and photo identification on the card will catch you out
  • Don't assume you can buy a two-day pass and choose the days you ski on, ski passes only work on consecutive days
  • Don't try and use a Morzine/Les Gets pass in Avoriaz, it won't work!
  • Don't forget your ID if you're buying a youth or a senior pass
