Morzine has some serious mountain terrain to play on

Morzine is a fantastic resort for all abilities from complete beginners to the most advanced skiers. The whole family can enjoy a trip to this part of the world whether you're a seasoned ski holiday maker or even if this is your first time venturing on a winter holiday.

From wide rolling blues to dramatic, daring blacks... the Portes du Soleil has it all.

Torico Performance Skiing - Ski School,

Size of the area

The mere size of the area means good skiers can come time and time again to this region and never ski the same area twice. With over 650 km of pisted runs between Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz, you’ll never get bored. The size also means good skiers can enjoy space to practice skills and tricks and also some pace on the wider, quieter slopes.

With this amazing amount of pisted runs comes an incredible amount of off-piste and backcountry skiing. So, if you're an experienced skier but are holidaying with beginners, you can still enjoy testing yourself on the edge of the pistes whilst also spending quality time with your friends and family.

Mixed ski areas- blues, reds, blacks, moguls

Alongside the size of the area, the variety and vast combination of pistes means that there's plenty for even the most advanced skiers to choose from. As well as 34 green runs and 119 blues across the whole region, there is also an incredible 101 red runs and 32 challenging blacks. Imagine battling moguls down the face of the Hauts Forts or, if you’re brave (and have the skill), taking on the challenge of the famous Swiss Wall. It's not for the faint-hearted but, no doubt, if you’ve got some experience under your belt you'll be searching this beast out. Head to the Fornet bowl in Avoriaz and take the far-left lift to the wall. You can take the lift over the Swiss Wall both up and down if you want to check out the conditions before attempting the run. It also means that less confident skiers can watch you as you attempt the wall. But please, be warned, this is a technically difficult run - don’t underestimate it. It's also extremely popular so can be very busy.

If you're staying over in Les Gets and aren't purchasing a full area pass, fear not, there are still tonnes of challenging runs for you in this amazing part of the region. Mont Chery is a hidden gem in Les Gets. It's a quiet area and fantastic on snow days. It's great if you want to find some space to practice tricks and get some speed up. It also has a handful of really good red and black runs with steep, difficult sections. However, with fewer people, you’ll feel like you're king of the mountain!

Snowparks

There are 30 snow parks, boardercross and skicross areas across the Portes du Soleil. This means that, if you're looking to develop your skills rather than just clock up the distance, then you've got plenty to choose from. Avoriaz was home to one of the first ever terrain parks in France, with The Stash remaining one of the favourite playgrounds in the area. There are an additional 4 parks in the Avoriaz area, including the expert park at the Arare. The Superpipe (near the Prodains telecabine) is also a firm favourite with the most experienced riders and has a smaller, sister half pipe for those feeling a little less daring.

In Morzine and Les Gets there are a couple of great snow parks as well. Look out for the Nyon park, it's a small boardercross complete with some smaller kickers and boxes. This can be found on the Nyon plateau which links Morzine with Les Gets. Les Gets is also home to a decent snowpark. It's great for both beginners and experienced skiers and can be found on Mont Chery. This again means it's often quieter than other parks, meaning you can really enjoy perfecting those jumps.

Alternatives - cross-country skiing, ski touring, off-piste

If you're an experienced skier, you don't just have to stick to the piste. The whole region is your oyster. There's a wealth of exciting alternatives for you to try whilst you're here and the right people to help you do it!

'Ski de fond' or cross-country skiing is growing in popularity and is great for your general ski fitness. You follow pre-made tracks through the backcountry, it involves flat and uphill sections as well as some fun downhill parts. You can easily find a guide to show you the best routes and help you perfect the technique.

Why not consider a day of 'randonee' or touring? You can hire the kit from any sports shop and a guide will be able to take you to some of the most beautiful, untouched parts of the region. Randonee is basically heading uphill on skis with skins attached. It means you can find areas that are otherwise inaccessible to skiers. This is hugely popular across the Portes du Soleil because of the miles and miles of stunning un pisted mountains available to explore. You’ll need avalanche gear and need to know how to use it. Don't go on your own either. It's important you're safe and know exactly what you're doing.

Similarly, why not hire an off-piste guide for the day? They will help you find areas you ordinarily wouldn't know about. It's a great way to push your skiing to the next level and there's so much off-piste to explore, it would be a shame to miss any of it!

Whether you're here to ski pistes, practice tricks in snow parks or explore the hidden gems of the region - there really is something for every type of experienced skier. You'll never get bored with the hundreds of kilometres of snowy mountains on your holiday doorstep.
