L'Atelier d'Alexandre Restaurant Review

A Gastronomic Experience with Excellent Service

The exciting and intricate menu at L’Atelier d'Alexandre proves that Alpine eateries need not be orientated solely to melted cheese. For a unique evening with up to eight courses of delicious food (arranged like a painting on your plate), L’Atelier is the place to be.

On arrival at Hotel Le Samoyede we were ushered through the reception, located opposite the tourist office, to the spacious and comfortable dining room of L’Atelier restaurant

The friendly waiter, detecting our British-ness, provided us with a completely English menu, without fuss. Chef Alexandre Baud-Pachon, who is originally from Morzine, has created the six-course (55 euros) or eight-course (75 euros) tasting menus, both of which can be supplemented with a predefined wine list – a glass paired with each course for the ultimate dining experience. The menu here changes every Friday according to what seasonal offerings the markets in town are featuring that week. You can be guaranteed that the six courses will suffice the appetite of most; including a vast cheeseboard, consisting of over fifteen cheeses, many sourced locally and a few from further afield, that invites you to sample as many of the different varieties as you like.

The eight-course menu, with its starter, two meat dishes, two fish dishes, cheese and two desserts transforms an evening into a special occasion. The fear that each course will be only a small mouthful and that you might walk away dissatisfied, is quickly allayed. A ninth course, an ‘amuse bouche’ was served to us before we had even scanned the rest of the menu. The highlight for me was the red mullet, served with mussel broth, tomato and red pepper - it was fresh tasting and bursting with flavour. There was melt-in-the-mouth veal with purple potatoes, succulent Fera from Lake Geneva, a sweet and tangy strawberry rhubarb soup and rosemary ice cream. All of the dishes were presented so exquisitely on the plate, I got the feeling I might be in Paris, rather than a mountain town.

The restaurant will happily cater to vegetarians, gluten-free or any other dietary requirements, and a four-course children's menu is also available for just 15 euros.

There is off-street parking at the back of the restaurant, just beyond a small terrace, which would make for a lovely spot for a glass of wine on a sunny evening.
