What's new this winter in Morzine

From the ski area to what's fresh in resort

featured in News & reviews Author Caro Blackwell, Ski Editor Updated

As winter takes hold in Morzine we take a look at what's new in town and on the slopes.

Early signs of snowfall here in The Alps are creating much excitement for the upcoming winter season. The ski industry here is raring to go and this winter looks like being an exceptionally busy one. Morzine Les Gets ski area opens on the 16 December and ski passes are on sale.

Delayed opening
We can confirm that the Morzine and Les Gets ski area will not open this weekend as planned. In order to preserve the snow for Christmas they will now open on 23 December.

The current rise in energy costs is offering the resorts an opportunity to fast track many of their eco/environmental sustainable initiatives for example LED lighting, optimising the speed of ski lifts, the addition of GPS systems in the snow groomers for added efficiency

Morzine Avoriaz has held the prestigious Flocon Vert label since 2021, reinforcing their sustainable commitment of current and future good practices in mountain tourist destinations.

Winter tyres
A reminder that it is now mandatory from 1 November to 31 March to have winter tyres (M&S marking, or all weather (four season) tyres), OR at least two snow chains/socks in the vehicle when driving in the mountain regions in France, following a law introduced from November 2021.

On the slopes

New beginners carpet
A new carpet, 147m in length and with an elevation of 19.5m will be installed to complement the existing one at the summit of Pleney. Starting close to the Nabor chairlift, behind the first aid post. This will help beginners access the ski area very easily.

The Arare Sector
A new 1.5km red run has been developed with a 300m vertical drop. The Arare area benefits from great natural snow cover being in a zone of heavy precipitation. This allows the new red run to be a natural route with no development work necessary. This run will be created solely by grooming without the need for any prior earthworks.

Development of play areas
Morzine continues its efforts to develop and improve the fun zones at the Pinguin Park, Chemin des Zouzous and Eagle Park.

Lac-Intrêts chairlift replaced
The new chairlift at Lac-Intrêts will be able to transport 3000 people per hour, this is an improvement of 600 people per hour on the old lift. This new lift features a direct drive motor negating the need for a gearbox thereby reducing the carbon footprint and reducing by at least 5% the lift's electricity consumption.

Respecting the environment
To help reduce the amount of artificial snow produced, the snowpark modules are shaped out of earth, this is part of the Flocon Vert label awarded to Morzine in 2021 to respect the environment.
In addition to this, another sustainability investment in Morzine has been replacing the fleet of nine piste bashers with Snowsat machines. The resort continues to provide training in efficient driving and usage to remain environmentally friendly.

Pas d'Aigle Morzine winter

The Pas de l'Aigle is a 15 metre glass footbridge at an altitude of 2019 metres and with a drop of 350 metres below. Clinging to the mountains and offering unique views and a spectacular 360º panorama of Mont Blanc and Lac Léman. Access to the bridge is via the Pointe de Nyon chairlift.
