Parkour - get fit, look cool!
by Helen McGrory | Resort Reporter | published 5-Sep-2008
Now here’s something new for you to try. From 16th – 21st September, Morzine will be host to a Parkour training camp! Parkour? “What's that?” I hear you ask. Well, you know all those super cool guys that run, jump and vault their way across a city by skimming across the roofs, walls and stairwells?? That's parkour – the art of movement!
Organised by Parkour Generations, a company “dedicated to teaching and displaying the discipline of parkour”, the 5 day training camp provides the opportunity to learn this unusual art form from some of the leading UK and French instructors. Also known as “free-running”, parkour basically focuses on finding the smoothest way to get around obstacles, either by climbing, jumping or vaulting over them, instead of taking the lift like you or I would.
Originating in France, Morzine is an ideal place in which to host the training camp, especially in a bid to lift the image of the sport out of the typically urban environment with which it is associated. Speaking to the Ski Club of Great Britain, organiser, Nick Rines, explained that they “have recced the area and have seen some interesting places to practice and learn parkour in both Avoriaz, Morzine and indeed in the alpine forests. In Avoriaz, for example, there are some interesting large buildings with good roofing and stairwells for parkour. The cable car station has an ideal entrance with lots of railings and concrete structures which are perfect for learning moves and developing balance."
There are still a few places available of the training camp which is open to all – whether you’re an experienced “traceur” (as practitioners of the sport are known) or can barely walk along a white line without falling over – the sole aim of Parkour Generations is to keep the spirit of parkour alive. This exciting and unusual event will be covered by national media from both the UK and France, so you might even get on the telly! Otherwise Morznet will be there too making our own video of the training sessions so at the very least, you could end up on our website on t’internet!
