Morzine Snow Report: 3rd January 2016

Winter is here!

featured in Snow report Author Giles Towler, Morzine Reporter Updated

The storms have finally hit the Portes Du Soleil.

Following an unusually dry December, snow cover in the Portes Du Soleil has been patchy in recent weeks. However, things look to be changing for the better, with Morzine and Avoriaz being hit by storms in the last 24 hours and more snow expected this week.

There has been approximately 30 centimetres of snow on the higher slopes of Avoriaz and 10 - 15 centimetres on the lower slopes of Morzine.

The higher slopes are still quite crowded, as people look for the best possible snow, but with the school holidays drawing to a close things should quieten down this week.

The snow is particularly good in the Arare and Fornet sectors, which are the highest areas of Avoriaz. The Lindarets bowl has mostly good snow, although there are still a few patches of ice. It is still a vast improvement on recent conditions. 31 out of 51 pistes are now open, and 25 out of 36 lifts.

Conditions are still far from ideal on the lower slopes, but large snowfalls are expected this week, bringing at least 60 cm of fresh snow, so hopefully the whole area will soon be back to how it should be for this time of year, and with storm clouds closing in right now it looks promising.

The higher slopes in Les Gets have managed to hold on to their snow throughout the dry spell, and every effort has been made to ensure that the slopes to town have been kept open.

Off piste is still inadvisable as there are still signs of rocks coming through the snow, as well as the danger of avalanches due to the lack of a stable base.

If the forecasts prove to be correct then it looks like it could be a great January, now that winter has finally arrived.
